“For the Bible Tells Me So”

This is a documentary opening up the Sundance Film Festival.  The director of the film, Daniel Karslake, received the following note when he was a young producer, having just done a show about a lesbian theologian:

“Last week I bought a gun. Yesterday I wrote the note. But last night I happened to turn on your show and just knowing that someday I might be able to go back into my church, I threw the gun in the river. My mom never has to know.”
   — A boy in Iowa

This note, one of hundreds he would receive, influenced him for the rest of his career.

The article is no substitute for actually watching the movie and I don’t want to make the mistake of judging the film’s intent or effectiveness at expressing honesty in this situation.  I do have to note that the biased argument the article makes about the intent of Falwell, Robertson, Dobson and their ilk to preach against homosexuality as a way to rally their base for financial support is so old and biased, it’s hardly worth noting.  (On the other hand, given the current climate in this country and the popularity of manipulating people via fear, it’s not entirely unfounded.)  Every now and then the televangelists actually preach from the Word, ya know.

As I read this article, the last sentence struck me hard.  It’s both the problem and the solution, expressed as one thought:

“These kids just want a glimmer of hope.”

I wish I could pound that thought into the heads of every pastor who ever thought to preach on homosexuality.

“These kids just want a glimmer of hope.”

“These kids just want a glimmer of hope.”

“These kids just want a glimmer of hope.”

There is hope in Christ!  There is a promise of a renewed mind and an awareness of your true self, created in the image of God!  Why is it so necessary to hammer home on homosexuality as though it were the unforgiveable sin?  Why do we bully people to Christ and then treat them no better after they commit to Him?  Why do we not fight the hatred and the discrimination in the churches not only against gay people in general, but sometimes even Christian men and women who have come out of that former life?

It just seems to me that the sin of homosexual fornication (vs. merely being homosexually oriented) comes from a felt need, the fulfillment of which not coming from God’s hand, but from our own perverted, broken ideas of how to find that fulfillment.  Ephesians 4:17-23 says:

Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ!– assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

Note the bolded words.  The truth is in Jesus.  If we don’t turn to Him for a solution, our own minds are futile against this deception.  Our former manner of life is corrupted through deceitful desires.  What we think and feel we’re “born with” is nothing more than deceit.  Our renewed minds come through Jesus and His renewing of our minds, showing us how we were truly created, as image-bearers of Christ.  Our homosexual desires are nothing more than deceptions, keeping us from being everything that God intended us to be.

Why is it so impossible to hear good preaching from the televangelists — no, from most preachers, on this issue?  Is there anyone out there getting any traction in this country preaching the truth in a positive manner, giving the young gay man or woman hope in Christ?  If you know of someone, let me know.  I’m determined not to fill up my blogroll with anything other than people who get it, who really GET the theology behind Christ’s desires in this area and can demonstrate that to the lost gay men and women in this world who are deceived and needing to see who they were truly meant to be.

Because they really do want just a glimmer of hope.  Real hope.

  1. I desire to do this, but engaging people in conversation is the hard part. They think when I tell them there is hope, that I am saying there is something wrong with them. Which I am, saying that they are not living as God intended, but the chasm between us is very quickly created and very hard to cross.

  2. Hello, Luke!

How do you engage these people in conversation? How do you start and under what circumstances? Maybe we can start there.

I understand the chasm. There is a great machine out there now that’s cranking out the idea that homosexual orientation is normal and natural. “Look!” they say, “There are so many examples in the animal kingdom of natural homosexuality! It’s just an evolutionary process in man.”

This world is not what it seems. It’s hard to get that through to people without sounding insane. If you’re interested, we can start a dialogue here on how to approach people the best and what things we can pull together to increase understanding on both sides.

  3. I have talked to men with SSA who come from a Bible believing background and they all knew they were sinners. There was no new chasm created when I told them of the HOPE in Christ, especially when I spoke of my own sin and my need for a Savior.

The Truth is always offensive to those who refuse to admit they are sinners.

  4. We are all sinners! If we were not a sinner we would need a Savior! Even after we are saved, we still need our Savior! We are all human and never stop sinning! Let me ask this question! If by some crazy reason, It became common knowledge for all people that had Blue Eyes to be sinners!! This would be their label, blue eyes! Would you pray for a change of color, or would you simply go buy colored contacts?
